MY LATEST ADVENTURES
Who knew Mother Nature took requests!?
Last month I made an appeal to Mother Nature. I was wishing for the waning of the winter white.
If you missed it Check out the video
She came through and granted my wish!
Even if it took a few weeks and chilly reminder that the winter white was always waiting in the wings.
I am grateful to be out of Old Man Winter's crosshair!
(Disclaimer: If it snows anytime in the next 6-8 weeks , The Edge of Fitting In... nor I bear any responsibility for the possible appearance of cold temperatures or snow, you know where you live!)
We are now a year into the pandemic. It is an experience that has touched every area of my life.
I am still happily working from home and would be thrilled to stay here.
I have managed to keep from pulling my hair out. Considering how short I keep it cut, that's a good thing!
Thanks to Zoom, phone calls and texts and yes even social media we manage to stay connected.
I have realized that I still like the woman I married.
Earlier this month we celebrated our 36th year together. I still smile when she walks in the room.
Finishing each other's sentences is a way of communicating.
We continue to have deep dive conversations about everything from Dark Matter to the concept of nothingness.
We ponder what happens to us when we die and we secretly hope that they have bacon & popcorn in the afterlife.
We are working out and eating better.
I continue to write, work, play, ponder life and enjoy cooking.
I look forward to walking in a warm spring rain and watching everything turn green again.
The smell of fresh cut grass will soon fill the air.
Hummm 63 degrees today... maybe I can convince my favorite girl to fire up the grill!

This month's theme:
"Mindset"
Quote of the Month

For several years I have been learning about many things related to our mindset and its role in... well... in everything we do, everything we think, everything we are. Our mindset defines how we live our lives. Our reactions to today's experiences shape our mindset and our mindset shapes our reactions to tomorrow’s experiences. Mindset is described in multiple ways depending upon who you are getting your info from. The prevailing descriptions of mindset I am most familiar boil down to 2 categories. Mindset can be described as either negative or positive. The terms that resonate with me are Fixed and Growth mindset.
With a Fixed mindset we limit ourselves. We limit what we can do, who we are, and who we can become. The person with a fixed mindset says, “I can’t change, I been this way all my life!” The fixed mindset parent tells their child, “Don’t worry, no one in our family is good at math”. The manager with the fixed mindset tells the new employee “There is only one way to fix this problem, and this is how we’ve always done it.” When you have a fixed mindset, the situation is just that, it is fixed. There is no possibility for improvement, no chance of anything new. There is no experimenting to find a better way. There is no possibility for growth.
With a Growth mindset, it’s all about change and being open to it. When growth is possible things look different. Nothing is necessarily the “final outcome”. Questions are asked. Because life is dynamic, it can and does change. The person with the growth mindset says, “I’ve been this way in the past… I want to be different. What can I do to change?” The parent of the child struggling with math may suggest tutoring or encourage the child to think of the math problems in terms of something they can relate to. (if you have 3 trucks and you get 2 more for your birthday…. How many trucks do you have now?) A manager with a growth mindset may task a new employee to look at existing procedures and search for ways to improve the processes.
(disclaimer: If the above-mentioned employee’s job is to diffuse bombs… there might actually be only one way… please keep all experimenting confined to the test lab! 😊)
I fall somewhere between the two mindsets and I am confident in saying I am not alone. We all have things in our lives that we believe are written in stone. If we keep doing things the way they’ve always been done, we never grow we, never improve. Part of this journey we call life is to strive to be better, to learn, to grow. Trying something new. Changing your mind based on research and reflection. Being open to listen to a different point of view. These are examples of a growth mindset.
Because I am a work in progress, I encourage us all to look within and realize that we can only control ourselves. Once we admit that we have the strength to reach out and test the waters of something new. We are then able to open our hearts and minds and listen to someone that thinks differently. We realize that we don’t have to agree. The goal is continual growth and understanding.
